Once a student turns 18, the rules around who can see what change — and that catches a lot of families off guard. Here's how it works in plain terms, and how we handle it at this practice.
HIPAA: Medical Privacy
Once your student is an adult patient, their psychiatric records and treatment details are protected under HIPAA — meaning Dr. Busch cannot discuss diagnoses, medications, or session content with parents unless the student authorizes it in writing.
FERPA: School Records
Separately, FERPA governs records held by the college itself — things like academic accommodations paperwork. Schools generally cannot share these with parents without the student's consent either, even if parents are paying tuition.
Our Release of Information
Before any conversation with parents, students complete a standard release of information (ROI) authorizing exactly what can be shared and with whom. This is the student's decision — not an automatic default.
What Parents Can Expect
Many students choose to authorize a general update with parents — progress, general direction of care, logistics like appointment scheduling — even when specific clinical details stay private. We'll help facilitate that conversation.
